Lucy McGonigle: A Rising Star in CrossFit
At just 18 years old, Lucy McGonigle is making waves in the CrossFit community. As a rookie headed for her first individual Games, she’s training at PRVN in Nashville, Tennessee, alongside seven-time champion Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr. This intense environment is both inspiring and daunting for McGonigle, who has admired Toomey-Orr for years.
The Challenge of Competing with the Best
Training days are rigorous, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and not finishing until around 5 p.m. McGonigle describes competing with Toomey-Orr as intimidating but ultimately rewarding. "I feel like I'm still early on in my career, so I don’t get too bummed out when Tia beats me," McGonigle shared. The young athlete has secured a few victories during their workouts, but she remains grounded, focusing on embracing the challenges ahead.
The Culture of PRVN
The atmosphere at PRVN has been described as both high-intensity and supportive. As McGonigle states, while the pressure may rise before workouts, the environment is predominantly chill. Other top competitors, including Ricky Garard and Madeline Sturt, have also begun training at PRVN. Together, they cultivate a community of camaraderie that enhances the athlete experience.
Building Confidence Ahead of the Games
Looking ahead to the competition in Albany, New York, McGonigle has cast aside numerical goals. Instead, she emphasizes trusting her training and coaches at PRVN. "I truly believe that I’m doing everything I can to show up the most prepared that I can be," she says. This mindset is crucial as she embarks on her journey in the Games, armed with confidence and a strong support system.
Engage with Local Communities
For those in and around Akron, Ohio, getting involved in the local fitness scene could be inspiring as they see rising stars like Lucy. Whether it’s joining a CrossFit class or simply following her journey through social media, living an active lifestyle and supporting local athletes can be motivational.
