The Akronauts Make History at IREC 2025
This summer, the Akronauts Rocket Design Team achieved a remarkable milestone at the 2025 International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) held in Midland, Texas. Competing against 143 collegiate rocket teams from around the globe, the Akronauts stood out by claiming first place in the prestigious 45,000-foot multi-stage category. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in their history as it is their first first-place finish.
Exceptional Design and Resilience
Competing with their rocket, Resurgence, the team showcased a fully student-researched and designed (SRAD) propulsion system. This 18-foot, two-stage vehicle was powered by a custom SRAD propellant aptly named Angry Listerine, and it included several technological innovations such as SRAD composite body tubes and an in-house flight computer, TRACE.
Resurgence carried added significance; built upon the legacy of last year’s Project E.R.I.C., whose design it reused, the rocket symbolized the team's resilience and learning through failure. The successful launch represented not just technical accomplishment but also a triumph of spirit.
Success in Flight
The launch on June 13 was a success, with Resurgence achieving a maximum altitude of 34,241 feet—surpassing 30,000 feet for only the second time in team history while managing a safe recovery. This feat highlights not only the ingenuity of the Akronauts but also their commitment to operational excellence.
Looking to the Future
During the awards ceremony on June 14, the Akronauts received accolades not only for their first-place finish but also ranked 22nd in the Design/Build category. Faculty advisor Dr. Manigandan Kannan remarked on their achievement, praising their innovation, persistence, and teamwork, and expressing gratitude for the ongoing support from the University of Akron.
The Akronauts' victory not only energizes the team but serves as a beacon of inspiration for the local community, showcasing what passionate young minds can achieve with determination and creativity. As they look towards future challenges and competitions, the Akronauts embody the entrepreneurial spirit of Akron, inspiring all who follow their journey.
