In a remarkable fusion of personal experience and academic prowess, three biomedical engineering students at The University of Akron are on the brink of revolutionizing burn care. Their journey began with a tragic twist of fate for student Hailey Essinger, whose life was irreversibly altered by a catastrophic industrial accident. Innovation Born from Adversity
Following her recovery from third-degree burns covering more than 30% of her body, Essinger was determined to make a difference. Alongside her classmates Matthew Flaker and Andrew Martin, Essinger collaborated with medical professionals to address a glaring gap in the current burn treatment landscape. The trio's breakthrough is a modular, reusable burn bandage that promises to stay securely in place, addressing the common pitfalls of traditional bandaging methods, which often fail in high-mobility areas like the shoulders and armpits.
