Celebrate Mental Health: National Depression Screening Day on October 16
As October marks National Depression Awareness Month, The University of Akron is taking significant steps to break the stigma surrounding mental health. On October 16, the Counseling & Testing Center (CTC) invites all students to participate in National Depression Screening Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Jean Hower Taber Student Union. This event aims to foster self-care and raise awareness about mental health resources available to every student.
Creating a Culture of Inclusion and Connection
A day dedicated to mental wellness cannot merely be marked by passive acknowledgment; it necessitates community involvement. The event encourages students not only to participate in self-care crafts but also to engage in meaningful conversations about their mental well-being. Dr. Natacha Keramidas, a staff psychologist at the CTC, emphasizes the importance of reaching out to friends and classmates: "A simple 'How are you doing?' can open the door for someone to seek help." This sentiment mirrors the broader goals of National Depression Screening Day, which aims to create a supportive environment for mental health discussions, providing a safe space for individuals who might suffer in silence.
Beyond the Screening: A Commitment to Mental Health
This year, the CTC is also introducing a valuable initiative called 'Let's Talk.' This program allows students to have brief, informal consultations with a counselor, enabling them to express concerns and get professional guidance without committing to full counseling. Group counseling sessions tackling various subjects—from managing anxiety to exploring body image—will also be made available.
The Importance of Awareness and Resources
Statistics reveal the pressing need for initiatives like this; with approximately 40 million adults in the U.S. facing depression or anxiety, National Depression Screening Day serves as a critical opportunity for early intervention. Mental health awareness isn't solely about screening; it's also about providing the necessary tools and resources for individuals to understand their feelings. By promoting workshops, screenings, and community events, such initiatives can effectively reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and encourage people to seek help.
Get Involved: Make Mental Health a Priority
As National Depression Screening Day approaches, the onus is on all of us to foster a culture of compassion and support. Community members are encouraged to participate in the event, whether through attendance or supporting their peers. The dialogue around mental health should continue even beyond October 16, reinforcing the message that mental well-being is just as crucial as physical health.
