Recognizing Akron’s Rich History Through Film
In an exciting celebration of its past, Akron, Ohio, is hosting free public film screenings under the "Akron Stories" initiative. Spearheaded by Art x Love and supported by the ArtsForward grant program, this project seeks to honor those who played a crucial role in establishing Akron as the Rubber Capital of the World. Mac Love, co-founder of Art x Love, emphasized the project's significance: “These films are so much more than local history.” Indeed, the narratives collected include accounts of resilience through adversity, illuminating the strength of the community shaped by rubber industry workers.
Connecting Generations Through Storytelling
The "Akron Stories" project began in 2019, collecting interviews from more than 135 rubber workers and their descendants. These stories, now captured in over 100 mini-documentary films, showcase not just individual journeys, but the broader tapestry of Akron's cultural history. The tales of perseverance from those who worked in the local rubber industry amidst challenging times—whether it be war or socioeconomic hardship—serve as vital links connecting generations.
Commemorating the Akron Bicentennial
As part of the forthcoming Akron Bicentennial celebrations, the screenings will take place at various local theaters and offer residents an opportunity to engage with their heritage. Scheduled events will occur on September 14 at Highland Theatre, October 18 at The Rialto Theatre, November 2 at the Linda Theatre, and November 23 at the Main Branch Library. These events reflect a community-wide effort to ensure that the stories of Akron's past are not only preserved but celebrated.
