Akron Law and Westminster College Launch Innovative 3+3 Program
The University of Akron School of Law is shaking up traditional legal education by partnering with Westminster College in Pennsylvania to introduce a groundbreaking 3+3 program. This initiative allows students to simultaneously earn both a bachelor’s degree and a law degree in just six years — a full year less than the conventional seven-year path.
Streamlined Education for Future Lawyers
Under the new agreement, qualifying Westminster students will complete their first three years of undergraduate study at Westminster before transferring to Akron Law for their final undergraduate credits and to begin their law coursework. Dr. James Rhoads, chair of Westminster’s Department of Political Science, emphasizes the accessibility of this pathway, noting that it not only expedites students' educational journeys but also mitigates financial burdens associated with extended studies.
The Admission Process
To participate, students must maintain good academic standing and complete their major and general education requirements by the end of their junior year. A completed application to Akron Law, along with a score from either the LSAT or GRE, must be submitted by February of that year to ensure automatic admission — a significant incentive for proactive students eager to enter the legal field.
